The University of Alberta has signed agreements to co-sponsor graduate students and promote collaboration in a variety of fields.

Sponsored students are international students whose studies are fully funded by their governments, companies, or third party entities. Support can include funding for tuition, fees, and living expenses. University of Alberta International (UAI) administers all international graduate student scholarship agreements.

Value & Duration of Award:

  • For Undergraduate programs

New first-year students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs with a valid Student Visa Permit are eligible for these scholarships. The scholarships, valued at up to $9,000, are payable over four years.

  • For Master’s programs

Master’s degree students will be awarded a stipend of $17,500, with international candidates receiving an additional $10,000 to cover fees.

  • For Doctoral Programs

These scholarships, valued at $5,000 per year, are intended for PhD students to cover their fee requirements.

Eligible Countries: International Students

Eligibility: To be considered for the University Alberta Scholarship:

  • Master’s Programs
    • Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
    • An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.
  • Doctoral Programs
    • Applicants are normally required to have completed a master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
    • An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.
  • Additional requirements
    Some departments have additional requirements, such as:
  • Statement of research interests
  • Previous work experience in the field
  • Educational tests such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or Miller Analogies Test
  • Contact the department directly to find out if there are any additional requirements.

Required Documents: To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

  • Transcripts
  • Degree certificates
  • English Language Proficiency scores such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL, etc. (if applicable)
  • CV, statement of intent, and writing samples
  • GRE, GMAT, Miller Analogies Test, or other test scores
  • Reference letters (supply names and email addresses of your references in the online application)

You will need to scan and save all your supporting documents (except reference letters) as a PDF file and then upload them directly to the online application portal. You must upload your documents on or before the application submission deadline for the program to which you are applying.
